In 1987 on the 8th of August World CARP members marched in Berlin to call for the end of the Wall. At that time no one else was demonstrating or speaking out in public. The picture above I took on that day shows the banners "Weg mit der Berliner Mauer" - "away with the Berlin Wall it reads.

Here is a picture of me in Munich some time in the 1980s with a banner that reads: Communism and Christianity are fundamentally incompatible - Martin Luther King

The end of communsim was already predicted by Reverend Sun Myung Moon. he is the one who started CARP and the reason that I was in Germany. When we started to do CARP activities Rev. Moon came to Camberg and gave a speech in which he made it quite clear that the fall of the Berlin Wall was the expectation of God. He made it quite clear that our activities should bring about the reunification of Germany. He said: Must go to Moscow! And indeed a few years later (1990) he came again to us in Camberg and gave a speech about how he had been to Moscow and met with Gorbachev.
Looking back I reminisce as I blow off the dust from my little piece of the Wall that I keep as a souvenir. I have my diaries and notebooks to read about what was done and said. I have photos that I kept and that remind me that I was there. My role may have been a small one but I did my best and took part whenever I could. I joined a small group on a Sunday afternoon in 1986 and went to make a prayer condition at the Wall. We prayed at seven places at the wall for reunification in peace and freedom. This was at a time when most people had given up hope. In my campus activities I spoke to many people about our vision. Heaven led me to an elderly lady who saw me visiting students. I told her how we were working to bring down the wall. She told me that she had had a dream that the wall came down. An encouraging sign.

I remember was the rally on August 8th 1987 at Checkpoint Charlie. The demo was very special. We were all singing "Die Mauer muss weg!" The wall must go! I remember we had some enemies there with a counter demonstration. We had the attention of the police and the media. As we left the anarchists were shouting taunts. I heard clearly in German: "C.A.R.P. is now gone and the Wall is still standing." When we left Checkpoint Charlie the wall was still there but there were invisible cracks in it. It was gone within 3 years. We feel that God could use our demo in His works to bring about the end of Communism.

After the Wall had fallen

When the Wall in Berlin came down I was living in Hamburg - doing some teaching of English conversation at Coles School of English. I watched the people climb upon the wall and partying on the television. They hacked pieces of the wall day and night. When I finally went there - there were some parts left and I took a walk around to see where I used to watch the guard dogs and patrols in Zehlendorf. I followed the route I used to go jogging around Teltower canal and crossed over to see from the other side. That was a special feeling.

I did travel around the former German Democratic Republic and I spent a special 10 days in Magdeburg speaking to people on the street about the re-unification. I saw the appartment blocks of Bitterfeld and it was clear that the problems of the Germans were not over. However they were free to travel to the West and meet relatives that were separated for 28 years.
